Not all tattoo ink is the same. The type of pigment, how itβs formulated, and what itβs made from all affect how a tattoo looks fresh, how it heals, and how it holds up over years. If youβre planning a color piece, or if youβve ever wondered why some colors seem to fade faster than others, the answer is usually in the ink chemistry.

How tattoo ink pigment works
Tattoo ink is a suspension of pigment particles in a carrier solution. The carrierβusually distilled water, alcohol, or witch hazelβhelps the pigment flow and allows it to be deposited in the dermis, the second layer of skin below the surface. Once there, the pigment particles are too large to be flushed away by your immune system, which is why tattoos are permanent. (They do fade over time as the immune system slowly processes smaller fragments, which is also normal.)
The pigment itself determines the color. Different pigments behave differently under the skinβsome are more stable over time, some are more prone to migration or fading, and some have higher rates of allergic reaction than others.
Black inks
Black is the most-used ink in tattooing and has the longest track record of safety and stability. Professional black inks are typically made from carbon black (derived from burning organic materials), iron oxides, or logwood extract (a plant-based pigment used in some vegan formulations).
Carbon-based black inks are extremely stable and tend to hold their depth well over time. Theyβre the default for most lining, solid black work, and grey wash (where the ink is diluted with distilled water to create lighter values).
One important note: black ink can heal with a slight blue or green tint depending on formulation and individual skin chemistry. If this matters to you, ask your artist which black they use and whether they have healed photos showing how it settles.
Color inks: organic vs. inorganic pigments
Color inks fall broadly into two categories based on their pigment source.
Inorganic pigmentsβmetal oxides and metal saltsβare the older class of color pigments. Iron oxides produce browns, reds, and yellows. Titanium dioxide is used in white inks and to lighten mixtures. These pigments tend to be stable and have a long safety record, but the range of available colors is more limited compared to organic pigments.
Organic pigmentsβsynthetic compounds derived from organic chemistry rather than metal compoundsβproduce much more vibrant, saturated colors across a wider spectrum. Modern professional color inks are predominantly organic pigment-based. The tradeoff is that some organic pigments have higher rates of sensitivity reactions and have been subject to increasing regulatory scrutiny. The EUβs REACH chemical regulations (updated in 2022) banned several widely-used organic pigmentsβincluding some blues and greensβdue to safety concerns, requiring reformulation across the industry.
Specific color categories and what to know
Red and warm tones (orange, yellow): Historically some reds had the highest rates of allergic reaction of any color, partly due to the pigments used (mercury sulfide in older formulations, since replaced). Modern professional reds use safer organic pigments, but reds still have a slightly higher sensitivity profile than black. Warm colors also tend to fade faster than black and cool tones over years of sun exposure.
Blues and greens: These were significantly affected by the EU REACH restrictionsβspecific pigments (Pigment Blue 15:3 and Pigment Green 7) were banned for tattooing use in 2022. Many ink brands have reformulated; some blues and greens havenβt yet reached the same vibrancy in their replacement formulations. If youβre planning a piece with a lot of blue or green, itβs worth asking your artist what theyβre using and looking at healed examples.
White ink: White is formulated primarily from titanium dioxide, which is stable. The challenge isnβt the pigmentβitβs behavior on skin. White ink heals more transparently than it looks fresh, often appearing as a light cream or ivory rather than opaque white. It shows most clearly on lighter skin tones and fades fastest with sun exposure. On medium to darker skin, white typically becomes invisible within a few years. Artists use white primarily as a highlight element in colored pieces rather than as a standalone design color.
UV/blacklight ink: These inks contain phosphorescent pigments that fluoresce under UV light, appearing glowing purple or green while invisible or very faint in normal light. Theyβre a specialty product with limited long-term safety data compared to standard inks, and durability tends to be lower. Reputable artists who offer UV work will be transparent about these limitations.
Vegan inks
Conventional tattoo inks sometimes use animal-derived ingredients: glycerin from animal fat, bone char in some black formulations, and shellac (from lac beetles) as a binder. Vegan tattoo inks substitute plant-based or synthetic alternatives for these components. Many professional ink brands now offer fully vegan lines, and some brands are vegan by default. If this matters to you, itβs a straightforward question to ask your artist before booking.
The practical takeaway
For most color tattoos, the specific ink choice is the artistβs domainβthey know what behaves well under their hand and how their preferred products heal. What you can do is ask to see healed photos of color work, particularly in the shades youβre planning. Fresh color always looks vivid; how a piece looks at six months and two years tells you much more about how the inks are performing on real skin.
